turned the sled off and let it sit with the cap off still the front end raised. once i got the sled home, i let it cool, did the same process, let the sled run with the front end up and the coolant cap off. a week later i went for a short ride, rode mostly roads, but the sled did just fine until i stopped and allowed it to idle, it then got hot and so i turned it off and was close enough to have it trailered home. then ran the sled around in a field for a while which it was just fine. put the front end up and ran the sled, allowed some bubbles to escape. i bled air out of the system but the sled heated up, so i shut it down quickly. i also replaced the thermostat which seemed a little worn. started out overheating and melted a few o rings and gasgets which i replaced. Yeah, i own a 95 mach z 780 and it does the same exact thing. The gauge always showed between 1/4 and 3/4 except on the piece of road that I have to take to my house (about 1/2 mile with little snow) then the gauge did go to just below the hot mark. Today I bled the system again and when I took her out she ran cool again. She overheated in about 2 miles in fresh powder!!!. we got 10" of new snow so I went on the trail. I purposefully went slow and tried to go in packed snow to test. When I took her on a short 4 mile run she was as cool as could be.the gauge never went above the 1/2 way mark. Monday, I put the front of the sled up, pulled off the cap to the coolant.let her run until the gauge showed just below hot, replaced the cap and let her cool down. (+25f first thing in the morning) so am doubtful that the coolant is freezing, but do appreciate your possible solution.Īs it stands now. The recent temperatures here in Mid -Coast Maine are just cold enough to freeze water. The strange thing is that one day this sled will run cool and then the next day under almost identical conditions it will overheat. When the gauge showed warm the reservoir and the heat exchangers were also warm which would seem to me that the coolant was going thru the system. I checked to make sure the coolant was going thru the system. Thank you all for your input.I appreciate it Try bleeding the sytem first and go from there. Sure the plugs could look black, but with 2 strokes you have to remember that oil is being burned aswell as the fuel. Is the sled running lean(fuel) this will also make it run hot. If this is the case you should be seeing the coolant going down. Heated compression is being pushed into the system. You need to restricted the flow so if you leave the hole therm out it will most def over heat.Īnother cause could be but very much doubt this is the head gasket could be bad. If it looks bad you could cut the center out and install only the outer ring to help slow down the flow. I would first try to bleed the system, then think about taking the therm out and look at it. If taken out you will see score marks along the sliding valve. to run close longer before it opens and then closing faster.Īnother problem can be that the therm. The problem sometimes is the plane advious. This helps allow the air to pass through allowing you to bleed the system easier. I guess the obvious solution is to carry my wife or sand bags of equal weight, but that cuts my gas mileage considerably.any other fixes?Īir in the system will cause it to heat up, an easy way to help this is to drill a 1/4" hole in the therm. The fluid level was at the top and the exchangers were steaming when I threw snow on them. Another weird thing that happened a few times was that the temp guage showed a higher temp after I sat for about 5 minutes than when I first stopped? Other times the guage went down as expected. It did come down when I hit the lake and jumped the speed up to 40-45mph, but as soon as I hit the tight trails (15-20mph) the temp jumped right back up. I tried running trough all the powder I could but it didn't seem to bring down the temp. So instead of hauling 320lbs the sled was hauling 185lbs and overheated. The only difference was that I was on the sled alone. (I had to stop 10 times within 57 miles). Today I took the sled over the same trails, same outside temps, same appx speed and it overheated continually. the temp guage stayed right around the middle. Yesterday my wife and I took the sled out for the first time and it ran great. I am riding a 99 Grand Touring 700 triple with picks (5000 mi.) Compression 135+ cold I am new to snowmobilng as well as to this post so would really appreciate any ithoughts about this problem.
